WYLLIE LONGMORE
Actor/Director/Tutor/Dramaturg
Wyllie Longmore was born in Jamaica and has been resident in England since 1961. He trained at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama as an actor and a teacher and both these disciplines have continued to inform his working life.
As an actor he has played a variety of roles in rep across the country and at the Royal National Theatre. He also has considerable experience in radio and television. He was named Best Actor of the Year in the Manchester Evening News Awards in 1995 for his performance in My Children! My Africa! at the Octagon Theatre Studio, Bolton; he was nominated in the same category in 2005 for I Just Stopped By To See The Man also at the Octagon and was Best Actor of the Year in a Supporting Role for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre in 2006.
As a teacher, he has worked in school, with youth and community groups and in the department of drama at Manchester University. He was the first Head of Acting at The Arden School of Theatre, a post he held from 1991 – 2002. He continues to work with actors in training.
In recent years he has been working as a director and dramaturg, mainly with young and emerging playwrights.
He has been an External Examiner for courses at Salford and Thames Valley Universities. He has been an advisor for the Arts Council and has served on a number of its panels and review teams. He has been a member of the board of the Northern Actors Centre and was Chair of Contact Theatre from 1997 - 2007. He is presently a member of the Regional Council of Arts Council England Northwest and a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester.
As a personal tutor, Wyllie Longmore offers a range of services for actors and for those whose occupations require specialist presentation skills.
